There’s a certain kind of tranquility that can only be found by the sea. One that transcends the splashing of waves, releases chaos and embraces you like an old friend.
After chasing many coastlines, from the vibrant shores of Goa to the coral blues of the Maldives, Mandarmoni, tucked away just a few hours from Kolkata, surprised me.
Not with extravagance, but with its quiet, no frills charm. Here, I experienced time slowing down, stories flowing and magic happening over a beach trip with friends.
The waves of Mandarmoni beach washed in pure joy, that lingered in it’s salty air and settled in our hearts.
Mandarmoni: A simple escape to recharge the soul

Nestled along the Bay of Bengal, Mandarmoni isn’t your typical “bucket list” destination.
It will however, let you unwind and recharge with every footprint that you leave on it’s sands.
Imagine long stretches of drivable beach, sparse crowds, dreamy sunsets and the freshest seafood. Steaming cup of childhood nostalgia, Hajmola tea sipped from earthen cups, over the echoing laughter of your mates.
Sometimes, all it takes is a beach trip with friends to turn ordinary moments into memorable ones.
Back where it all began

As young and restless teenagers, we couldn’t wait to turn 18. The freedom we imagined was boundless. Late nights, wild plans, and finally doing all the things we were told not to.
“Freedom” meant being our candid selves and chasing thrills just for the sake of it. We got into trouble more often than not and then doubled down just to throw off the people trying to rein us in.
It was a different time in more ways than one. No mobile phones, no cameras and no social media. The supreme advantage however, was that we stuck together and had each other’s backs.
Friendships weren’t curated, they were real, raw, and resilient. Something that is rare today.
Maybe that’s why this beach trip with friends felt like more than just a weekend getaway. It wasn’t just about escaping the chaos of city life, as it was about reconnecting with a version of ourselves we hadn’t been in a while.
The one that laughed without restraint, spoke without filters, and lived without timelines. This austere coastline gave us the space to just be.
We weren’t colleagues, parents, or professionals, simply friends, as we used to be. And in those unhurried moments, we remembered what made these bonds unshakeable in the first place.
On the road to Mandarmoni
On the first Friday of May, we loaded two cars with bags, laughter, and set off in search of our old, unfiltered selves.
A pitstop for breakfast included luchi (deep-fried puffed bread), potato curry, and roadside coffee adding flavor to our ride, while music and memories kept the wheels spinning.
By noon, Mandarmoni welcomed us sun-drenched, windswept, and wide open to whatever came next.
Check-in brought its usual chaos, doors flung open, beds claimed, and playful jabs about who scored the best room.
We soon gathered for a Bengali feast of fragrant rice, velvety dal, seasonal veggies, crisp fried fish, spicy chicken, and the juiciest mangoes we’d picked up en route.
With our stomach’s full and hearts fuller, we slipped into a session of unfiltered chatter, sprawled across a single room, laughing like old times. Until, the lure of the waves whispered that it was time for some vitamin sea.
Waves, whispers, and vitamin sea

As we strolled down the beach, some of us hand in hand, waves twirling around our ankles, the playful whispers of the sea washed away tiredness and stress from our bodies.
With every salty splash laughter echoed, selfies turned into memories, until the golden hour turned to twilight.
At a seaside shack, we sipped hot lemon tea, passed around a hookah, and watched the sky darken, before returning to our rooms.
Back at the hotel, the evening slipped into a haze of toasts, raised not just to friendship, but to time itself.
The magic of this beach trip with friends brought the past rushing back to us, as old Hindi melodies and vintage English pop played the soundtrack of our youth.
We drank like we used to. Easy, loud, and full of heart. Sweet nostalgia wrapped around us, making even the resort staff join in. Laughing along and serving appetisers that kept the night deliciously alive.
It’s a blur when we drifted off to our rooms that night, amidst laughter, half-songs, empty plates, and hearts full from stories still unfinished.
Stillness of sunrise

The next morning, a few of us found ourselves on the beach just past dawn, barefoot and quiet.
In that early hour, the breeze was crisp, the waves gentle, and the place beautifully hushed. Furthermore, there was no rush, no noise, just the rhythmic pull of the tide and the scent of the sea.
The morning freshness under a softening sky, felt like a magic remedy for our weary urban souls. As the sun climbed, we returned refreshed, ready to take on the day.
Regrouping over breakfast, we planned out the day ahead. First the pool, followed by a scenic 45-minute drive to Digha.
Over there a coastal lunch near the lively beach beckoned with the promise of fresh catch, local flavours, and more memories waiting to be made.
A coastal drive and a Bengali feast at Digha

The coastal drive to Digha unfolded like a moving picture postcard. The winding road along the scenic Bay of Bengal sea, made the drive effortlessly serene and enjoyable.
Following arrival, we settled into a seaside restaurant which served up a traditional Bengali feast. Spicy crab curry, golden fried prawns, and the ever-iconic regional delicacy Hilsa.
Our leisurely lunch was deeply satisfying.
Later, as we strolled along the Old Digha embankment, the afternoon sun danced on the water and the cool sea breeze below the scattered clouds made it surprisingly pleasant.
We found a shaded spot, settled in, and simply admired the view. Waves rolling in, horizon shimmering, and a sense of calm that city life rarely allows.
While Digha buzzed with energy, crowded markets, and a lively promenade, Mandarmoni offered a quieter, more unspoiled escape.
If Digha is about activity, Mandarmoni is about atmosphere. A slower, softer retreat for those seeking space, solitude, and the sound of their own laughter over the surf.
The final sunset and some midnight magic

Our return to Mandarmoni was just in time to catch a final sunset. The beach welcomed us with a sky ablaze in gold.
We lingered on at the beach well past sunset, sipping endless cups of Hajmola tea, reluctant to let go. As if trying to bottle-up the sea itself.
This beach trip with friends had already gifted us some memorable moments, but the night was still young and had much more to offer.
Later, the evening unfolded with the familiar rhythm of drinks, music, and laughter layered over plates of indulgent Chinese fare.
Then just past midnight, on a whim, we returned to the beach. The breeze was cooler, the world quieter, and the sand beneath our feet softer.
It was a hushed, and surreal experience. The waves moved like whispers, the sky stretched endlessly above, and for a brief, perfect hour, it felt as if the place belonged only to us.
Leaving the shore, carrying the calm

On the final morning we returned to the beach, one last time before our lives called us back.
The tide was low, the breeze gentle, and the shore nearly deserted, befitting a final goodbye.
With each step on the sand, we soaked in the calm, knowing full well that city life would soon chase this stillness away.
At breakfast we lingered on, reluctant to get back to the scripted schedules of the concrete jungle.
As we pulled away from the beach resort, a quiet lull settled in. The kind which the end of a truly meaningful journey brings.
Our beach trip with friends wasn’t just a weekend escape, it was a soul-refreshing reminder of who we are beneath our lives and responsibilities.
Although, modest in appearance, Mandarmoni beach offered us something rare. The luxury of time, of friendship strengthened, and of memories made with sand between our toes and joy in our hearts.
