Three best holiday destinations in Rajasthan for couples

Rajasthan is a jewel in the northwestern heartland of the Indian subcontinent. The history of this state dates back to the Indus Valley Civilisation (3300 BCE). Over the centuries, Rajasthan has endured governance of dynasties like the Mauryas, Rajputs, Mughals, the British Raj and evolved through Post Independence eras to become what it is today. Every bit of history has not only left it’s mark but continue to influence day-today existence.

Rajasthan has a treasured history of royals, rich cultural heritage, splendid architecture and the most diverse landscape.

Here you will find mountains, lakes, forests, the Thar desert, a shared border with Pakistan, enriching cultural experiences and the most delectable food. Welcome to the land of palaces, forts, temples, music, dance and heart warming hospitality.

In this blog, I am sharing my road trip experience through three amazing places, which I consider to be the best destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

Incredible architecture of Rajasthan

Embarking on an epic road trip from Mumbai to Rajasthan

Planning a road trip of nearly 3000 kilometres from Mumbai through Gujarat to Rajasthan was a journey by itself.

Trying to cover as much as possible, in what I thought were the perfect destinations in Rajasthan for couples, had it’s challenges. However, the memories that we made in the bargain were completely worthwhile.

Here are some basic tips to help you plan your road trip:

  • Choose the places that you would like to cover
  • Create a route map from point to point
  • Research accommodation options in all the locations you would visit, including transits
  • Make a ballpark estimate of funds under heads like accommodation, food & beverages, fuel, tolls, shopping, personal indulgences and emergencies, should they arise
  • List the things you may need to purchase for your travel
  • You may consider getting your vehicle serviced. Make sure to double check the batteries, tyres, lubrication, fuel, etc,. Carry an emergency kit in your car
  • Have all the emergency numbers handy. For example, your insurer contacts, auto dealer coordinates, roadside assistance numbers etc,.

For new road trippers it is important to understand that even with months of planning, things sometimes don’t work out exactly as planned. That is perfectly ok.

Be open to changes that you may have to make as you go, while planning and on the trip. For example, always make bookings which offer flexibility of cancellation and modification, in case required.

The whole purpose of road trips is to have more flex and fun as you go.

Intricate sandstone carvings in Jaisalmer

Rajasthan is a location within which lie iconic travel spots like Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Ajmer, Pushkar, Mount Abu, Ranthambore and more.

It’s never possible to cover all of the above in one go. In this trip we covered Mount Abu, Jaisalmer & Udaipur which top my list of destinations in Rajasthan for couples

Detailed itinerary of the road trip :
  • Day 1: Mumbai to Ahmedabad – distance 560 kms. We started at 6am, took a 40 minute break for breakfast on NH48 around 9 am. From there we travelled to Surat to have lunch around 1 pm. This was our second break of 1 hour. Then we drove straight to Ahmedabad reaching there by 6.30 pm.
  • Day 2: Ahmedabad to Mount Abu – distance 230 kms. We started at 7 am and reached Mount Abu after 12.30 pm. 45 minutes spent on the way for breakfast and an additional washroom break of 10 minutes.
  • Day 3 & Day 4 : We explored Mount Abu
  • Day 5: Mount Abu to Jaisalmer – 434 kms covered in approximately 10 hours. We took just 2 breaks. 45 minus for lunch and 10 minutes for some leg stretch.
  • Day 6 & 7 : We soaked in the sights of the golden city of Jaisalmer
  • Day 8 : Jaisalmer to Udaipur – the total distance of 491 kms took a little over 10 hours to complete. We took two breaks. Forty minutes for lunch, later another 15 minutes to stretch our limbs and freshen up a bit.
  • Day 9, 10 & 11 : We spent romancing the city of lakes, Udaipur
  • Day 12 : Udaipur to Vadodara- distance of 354 kilometres covered in 6 and half hours with just one break of 25 minutes for lunch.
  • Day 13 : Vadodara to Mumbai : the home stretch of 411 kilometres was the hardest. It took almost 11 hours to get back manoeuvring road construction detours and massive traffic snarls.

Mount Abu

Mount Abu is among the best destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

Being the only hill station, it offers relatively cooler climes and a near pollution free atmosphere. The natural beauty of the mountains and the quietness of the forest area make for the perfect place for relaxation and leisure.

You can enjoy boat rides on the Nakki lake and trek the mountains around the mini Nakki. There are some lovely spots from where you can watch the sunrise and sunset beyond the mountains.

The most surreal experience for us was watching the full moon-rise through twilight and darkness then fade slowly into daylight the next morning.

There are some beautiful spots where you can witness breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the mountains.

Our most surreal experience was watching the full moon-rise through twilight and darkness. Then, fade slowly into daylight early the next morning.

2-3 days in Mount Abu is enough to cover major attractions and spend some cozy moments together.

Listed below are the places worth visiting when in Mount Abu

Dilwara Temple

Built in parts between the 11th and 16th century, it stands not just as a place of worship for Jains but also as a historical monument and a masterpiece carved in white marble.

Religious beliefs notwithstanding the Dilwara Jain Temple is a must visit.

Exquisite carvings have been put together piece by piece all over the temple to create a beautiful symmetry. Photography is strictly prohibited inside.

Nakki Lake

The most popular tourist spot in Mount Abu, the Nakki lake is well known for boating and strolling around.

The lake provides a 360 degree view off the surrounding hills. There are many hotels, cafes and restaurants in the nearby area of the lake.

Mini Nakki lake & surrounding hills

Hills and forests surround the mini Nakki lake, an artificial water body, nestled slightly away from the centre of Mount Abu.

It is an ideal place for trekking through the mountainous forest and catching magnificent panoramic views from the top. The best time to do this is before sundown. This way you are able to catch the most stunning sunset view from the hilltop.

This area was the most romantic among the destinations in Rajasthan for couples seeking seclusion amidst nature. You do however, need a paid guide to take you through the forest trails.

Guru Shikhar

The highest point of Mount Abu and a spot from where you can watch the sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset. You can also trek through this area to capture stunning photos of the surrounding landscape from the top.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort

The golden city of Jaisalmer is a place to experience cultural heritage, architectural marvels and delicious food.

The drive from Mount Abu to Jaisalmer is largely through miles and miles of arid landscape. The emergence of sandstone quarries in the desert signal your approach towards the Golden city.

Jaisalmer has a unique welcoming aura, making it one of the most beautiful destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

To start with, majority of the construction is in yellow sandstone, casting a golden glow as you move about the city.

Although the city centre is congested, it is not intimidating.  Everything is within walking distance therefore unnecessary hustle is not in order.

Spending 2-3 days here is good for soaking in the flavours and covering your places of interest.

Popular attractions in Jaisalmer :

The Jaisalmer Fort
The imposing Jaisalmer Fort

Also known as the Sonar Killa, this is the most imposing piece of heritage architecture in Jaisalmer and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built during the 12th century by the Rajput king Rawal Faisal, the Golden Fortress is still home to more than 3500 families. Inside there is a museum, markets, cafes, hotels, a jain temple and so much more. You get a panoramic overview of the entire desert city and it’s surrounding areas from the top of the fortress.

Steeped in history, folklore and novelty, the Jaisalmer Fort is a must-visit amongst the destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

Nathmal ki Haveli
Nathmal Ki Haveli

Situated in the by-lanes of Jaisalmer, stands this architectural beauty from the 19th century.

Word has it, that it was built by two brothers who constructed the Haveli independently from opposite sides. At first glance, it’s difficult to differentiate between the intricacies on either side.

But as you look closer, you begin to admire the uniquely different yet, symmetrical blend of art and craftsmanship.

Patwon ki Haveli
Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon ki Haveli is a standing example of Jaisalmer’s unique cultural heritage and artistic sensibilities.

This five storied structure is said to be the first ever Haveli built in Jaisalmer.  Constructed during the 19th century by a bullion merchant named Guman Chand Patwa, it showcases exquisite interior and exterior carvings, decorated ceilings, marble inlay work and a room walled with mirrors.

The beautiful lattice work, intricate patterns, elaborate overheads and inlay work weave their heritage charms, making it an extraordinary place to explore.

Mandir Palace Museum
Mandir Palace Museum

Built in the early 20th century, the Mandir Palace lies in the centre of Jaisalmer. It is part heritage hotel, part museum and residence of the royal descendants of the late Maharawal Jawahir Singh.

The Museum draws throngs of tourists during the day and remains a prominent attraction which is definitely worth a visit.

The entire property complex of Mandir Palace is a beautiful amalgamation of Rajput & Mughal influenced heritage architecture.

The facade of the hotel is opulent, imposing, and well-maintained, making it one of the most romantic destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

A visit to this museum gives a glimpse into the lifestyle and artefacts of the royal family from the yesteryears.

Sams is a village which is located 42 kilometres away from the city centre of Jaisalmer. This is an area of the Thar desert that has natural sand dunes. If you are among those who would like to experience staying in the desert, you can choose from numerous camps that offer a wide range of facilities.

Popular activities in this area include jeep safaris in the desert, camel rides and watching the beauty of sunsets in the midst of nowhere. The jeep safari is a thrill that some people seem to enjoy while many others don’t. The camel ride can be an interesting activity to try out.

Some hotel and food options in Jaisalmer that are worth exploring.

The other absolute must try is Fateh Chand Dewan Chand ki kachori near the Jaisalmer fort. Hygiene be damned, when you taste heaven in every bite!

Udaipur

City Palace Udaipur

Named after it’s founder,  Maharana Udai Singh II, Udaipur was once the capital of Mewar, the oldest kingdom of Rajasthan. It is one of the top-rated romantic destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

It is home to some of India’s most iconic & luxurious hotels, each of which are idyllic destinations all by themselves.

While tourism drives Udaipur, it is also notable for it’s art, culture and handicrafts.

Known as the city of lakes owing to the 5 artificial waterbodies, I found Udaipur to be clean, green and relatively less polluted.

The Aravali Range acts as a natural barrier, offering some protection from the scorching heat of the Thar Desert. Winters & monsoons are the most suitable times to visit here.

These are the places that you should not miss in Udaipur:

City Palace Udaipur
City Palace Udaipur

Standing on the banks of the lake Pichola, the City Palace is an expansive multiplex built using white marble and granite.

This glamorous complex houses interconnected palaces, courtyards, gardens and gives a birds eye view of the city. Even though it has been built in parts over centuries, there exists flawless architectural harmony in it’s construction.

A major part of the palace is a museum housing artefacts and items from the glorious Mewar kingdom. The other significant portion is the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel. Shri Niwas Palace, also part of the City Palace complex is the other hotel owned & managed by the HRH group.

We spent an idyllic winter afternoon romancing this historical palace. I definitely recommend the City Palace as one of the top destinations in Rajasthan for couples to explore together.

Lake Pichola

This is an artificial lake situated in the city centre of Udaipur. The surroundings of the lake have a serene beauty which is captivating. A perfect location to stroll around during the late afternoon hours before the crowds throng the area.

You can enjoy boat rides in the lake which take you around the Jag Mandir island, the Taj Lake Palace, the havelis and ghats in the old part of the town.

Some luxury hotels offer customised boat rides for resident couples and families during the sunset hours. The stunning views around Pichola at twilight make it the most fascinating destination in Rajasthan for couples.

Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar Lake

Along the northern side of lake Pichola lies the Fateh Sagar lake. Taking a walk around the calm waters of the lake or enjoying boat rides are popular activities here.

The area across the lake is a street food lovers paradise. Numerous stalls tempting customers with delectable street fares.

Jag Mandir

An island Palace built in the midst of lake Pichola, has been converted into the Jag Mandir Palace Hotel owned and run by the HRH group.

The island is only accessible by boat which can be availed from the jetty near the City Palace. Part of the Jag Mandir island is open to the public for visitation during the daylight hours of 10 am to 6 pm.

A couples dinner under the stars at the beautiful Jag Mandir Palace is highly recommended. The experience may be slightly pricey, but it will remain a unique and unforgettable memory from the destinations in Rajasthan for couples. Bookings can be made by directly calling the hotel.

Ambrai Ghat

In the old part of town and on the banks of lake Pichola is the Ambrai Ghat, which was a common bathing area of the locals from the bygone era.

It offers alluring views of the lake, the City Palace and the Jag Mandir island during the early morning and post sundown hours. A cool place to catch the sunset, go for boat rides and a great spot to capture stunning photographs.

The restaurant Ambrai, popular among the dining destinations in Rajasthan for couples, is located beside the ghat. During the peak season, it is recommended that you book at least a week in advance if you want to eat here.

Mewar Light and Sound Show
Venue of Mewar Light & Sound Show

This light & sound show takes place every evening at the Manek Chowk within the City Palace compound.

It is an hour long depiction of Mewar history through the centuries.

Ticket offerings come in two packages with or without dinner options. The show is alright if you are history buff but the dinner can easily be skipped.

Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
Sajjangarh Palace

Located on top of a hill that overlooks the Fateh Sagar lake, the Sajjangarh Palace was built as a monsoon retreat for the royals. The palace is surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary of the same name, where the Maharanas enjoyed their hunting games.

Although the palace no longer has any artefacts, the gardens and the structure has been modestly maintained for visitors.

Nestled in the old part of Udaipur, this charming heritage hotel rests on the banks of Lake Pichola near Ambrai Ghat. A distinguished 4-star property, it seamlessly blends traditional elegance with modern comforts. Guests can opt for serene lake-view rooms, that offer a tranquil retreat.

The renowned Ambrai restaurant provides a stunning nighttime view of the city. You can indulge in a diverse culinary experience featuring regional, Chinese, and Continental cuisine, complemented by a fine selection of spirits and wines.

Trident Udaipur

The Trident is among the best 5-star properties in Udaipur. This expansive space is marked by lush lawns, plush interiors, and the trademark Oberoi hospitality. Their warm welcome and attention to detail ensure a seamless stay.

The Aravali restaurant, the hotel’s main dining venue, offers indoor, tent, and terrace seating. Indulge in a delightful selection of Continental, Italian, and Rajasthani cuisine.

Additionally, the hotel offers boat rides for groups and couples staying here—an experience not to be missed when visiting these destinations in Rajasthan for couples.

The Oberoi Udaivilas

Ranked among India’s top 10 hotels in 2024, Udaivilas is a destination in itself. Defined by opulence and grandeur, this exquisite property sits on the banks of Lake Pichola, offering breathtaking views of the City Palace.

Lush, manicured gardens and lawns surround the estate, where peacocks gracefully roam around shimmering onyx fountains. The luxurious rooms and suites feature semi-private and private pools, with select suites offering exclusive butler services.

Indulge in a world-class dining experience under the open sky at Suryamahal & Chandni, serving European and Indian delicacies, or savor authentic Indian flavors at Udaimahal.

The famous kachori shop from old town Udaipur

Besides those mentioned above, here are a few more renowned food spots to explore:

  • Traditional Khana for traditional vegetarian homestyle Rajasthani thali, quite distinct compared to typical Rajasthani restaurants.
  • Upre at the Lake Pichola Hotel for Indian, Chinese or Continental. We tried the Indian fare which was average but, the rooftop view and wine sort of made up for the misses.
  • Khamma Ghani, favoured for it’s seating overlooking the lake Pichola. However, food was moderate in taste & quality.
  • Paliwal Restaurant at the Jagdish Temple road in the old city. This not a restaurant per se, just a small shop which is famous for selling kachori’s for breakfast every morning. Piping hot and lip smacking kachoris straight out of the wok! Don’t miss this one.
